Developing a knowledge infrastructure to foster regional innovation in the periphery : a study from Quebec's coastal region in Canada

Análisis regional ; Canada ; Competitividad ; Conocimiento ; Industria ; Innovación ; Organización ; Quebec ; Región periférica ; Sector público
Building on the case study of Quebec’s coastal region maritime industry, the relevance of the regional innovation system framework to analyse and plan innovation development in the periphery is discussed. The analysis indicates that, while public
policies using the regional innovation system framework contributes to create a relatively well-developed knowledge infrastructure in the maritime industry, they have not yet succeeded in achieving the main goal of fostering a ‘competitive regional
production system’. This case suggests that a ‘thickening’ of the knowledge infrastructure does not automatically lead to significant development in the productive system in peripheral regions.

The A. is dealing with various aspects of regional identities. They are established and maintained with social functioning, passing through different spheres of social activities. All these activities are present in spatially integrated areas
, causing differentiation of space and creating the sense of common regional belonging. The article presents the causes of regional identity and its consequences in spatial structures, e.g. the appearance of identity regions. - (IKR)

Today, a selective pattern of regional growth is emerging to differentiate single regions’ growth and determine a varied mosaic of development stories. This fact calls for more stringent and selective interpretations of the different regional assets
defining growth strategies for each region, city or territory: in short, what is increasingly called ‘territorial capital’, and its efficient exploitation. The paper inspects in depth this concept and highlights all elements that are embedded

Ivan Gams made his greatest contributions to regional geography in the second half of the 20th century with the development of methodology, although the theory of regional geography was in decline. The role of thematic cartography, geographic
information systems and the humanistic component strengthened while regional geography revived with the Slovenia’s independence in 1991. Gams enriched it with his regionalization schemes, secondary-school textbooks, leading the regional geography research

This study examines return migration from the perspective of Sweden metropolitan regions. More specifically, the paper addresses, using register data, the following research questions: (1) How extensive are the volumes of return migration
to the three metropolitan areas in Sweden compared with other types of regions, and how does this return migration contribute to population redistribution? (2) To what extent do return migrants remain in a region after having returned and are there any regional
differences in this regard? (3) How do individual characteristics influence the probability of becoming a return migrant versus another type of migrant or a nonmigrant, and what is the influence of region type in this regard?

Import flows : extraregional linkages stimulating renewal of regional sectors?
Economic sector ; Export ; Importation ; Industry ; Regional development ; Regional economy ; Specialization ; Sweden
Desarrollo regional ; Economía regional ; Especialización ; Exportación ; Importación ; Industria ; Sector de actividad ; Suecia
This article examines the role of regional import flows for renewal of regional Swedish industries. The hypothesis is that imports stimulate renewal of local industries by being vehicles for technology diffusion and means by which local firms can
exploit advantages of global specialisation. It finds robust and positive relationships between high-quality imports and renewal of regional exports, where the latter are measured by the introduction of novel export products of local firms. Connectedness
to international markets via import networks appears to be a stimulus for the renewal of regional exports.

Accesibilidad ; Análisis regional ; China ; Ferrocarril ; Impacto ; Sistema de información geográfica ; Tren de alta velocidad ; Índice
The AA. develop a new method to calculate regional accessibility with GIS, using the Shanghai–Nanjing high-speed rail (SNHR) as an example. They calculate the indexes of normal accessibility, average accessibility and weighted average accessibility
before and after SNHR was put into service. They also calculate the changes of the indexes. The results show that the values of all the indexes decrease and that regional accessibility is improved by SNHR. The reduction degrees are not the same in all
different places. In addition, the AA. discuss the potential impact of accessibility changes. Accessibility changes will promote sustainable development and regional cooperation. At the same time, as the imbalance of accessibility changes, the gap
of competitiveness levels between regions along the line and edge regions will be expanded.

to continuity or discontinuity of the settlement tradition. Two model regions have been selected, the Jeseník region, where the population was almost completely replaced after the World War II, and the Valašské Klobouky region, where the population remained
