This study examines return migration from the perspective of Sweden metropolitan regions. More specifically, the paper addresses, using register data, the following research questions: (1) How extensive are the volumes of return migration to the three metropolitan areas in Sweden compared with other types of regions, and how does this return migration contribute to population redistribution? (2) To what extent do return migrants remain in a region after having returned and are there any regional differences in this regard? (3) How do individual characteristics influence the probability of becoming a return migrant versus another type of migrant or a nonmigrant, and what is the influence of region type in this regard?
