Sediment budgets and rates of sediment transfer across cold environments in Europe : a commentary
Climatic change ; Cold area ; Erosion ; Europe ; Model ; Northern Europe ; Periglacial features ; Permafrost ; Sediment budget ; Sediment transport
The aim of this short paper is to provide a personal commentary on some of the themes discussed in this Special Issue and highlight other key topics and areas of potential future importance : glacial sediment transfer processes; cold-region coastal
processes; cold climate solute dynamics; and the role of cold-tolerant ecosystems in conditioning sediment dynamics.
This paper uses qualitative and quantitative data analyses to examine multi-scale spatial patterns of sedimentation in a large anastomosing river floodplain in SW Queensland. Patterns of sedimentation at the channel, floodplain process zone
and geomorphic unit scales are elucidated from qualitative, but traditional, sediment core stratigraphy, and compared against multi-scaled patterns obtained from quantitative multivariate analyses.
Buffers, barriers and blankets : the (dis)connectivity of catchment-scale sediment cascades

This paper introduces the concept of landform impediments, termed buffers, barriers and blankets, that impede sediment conveyance by limiting the connectivity between landscape compartments. Buffers restrict sediment delivery to channels, barriers
inhibit sediment movement along channels, and blankets drape channel or floodplain surfaces affecting the accessibility of sediment to entrainment. These features operate as a series of switches which turn on/off processes of sediment delivery, determining
Evaluation of the SEDD model for predicting sediment yield at the Sicilian experimental SPA2 basin

In this paper, a spatially distributed model of the hillslope sediment delivery processes, named the sediment delivery distributed (SEDD) model is initially reviewed; the model takes into account the sediment delivery processes due to both
the hillslope sediment transport and the effects of slope curvature. Then the rainfall and sediment yield events measured at the experimental SPA2 basin, in Sicily, in the period December 2000/December 2005 are used both to calibrate the SEDD model and to verify
the predictive capability of the distributed sediment delivery approach at event and annual temporal scales.

This paper presents a reconstruction of the development of the Dragonja floodplain due to these land use changes during the last 60 years. The reconstruction is based on dating of floodplain sediments using Cs 137 profiles, measurement of actual
sedimentation rates using artificial grass sedimentation mats, and linking this information to the present-day hydrological behaviour of the river. The sedimentation mats show that floodplain sedimentation was restricted to peak flows of considerable magnitude

Feedbacks between erosion and sediment transport in experimental bedrock channels

To explore the mechanisms of river incision, the AA. conducted laboratory experiments in which the complexities of natural bedrock channels were reduced to a homogenous brittle substrate (sand and cement), a single sediment size primarily
transported as bedload, a single erosion mechanism (abrasion) and sediment-starved transport conditions. They find that patterns of erosion both create and are sensitive functions of the evolving bed topography because of feedbacks between the turbulent flow

The aim of this paper is to provide A/B plane-and-poles-to-plane fabric data for glacigenic deposits of known origin which can be employed as control samples in assessments of sediment genesis, especially diamictons, in glacial environments
. The clast macrofabric data presented in this paper are compiled from previous studies on glacitectonized lake sediments and subglacial tills, and from new research on glacimarine and glacilacustrine deposits.
Modelling sediment transport from bare rilled hillslopes by areally averaged transport equations
Erosion ; Mathematical model ; Model ; Rill wash ; Sediment transport ; Watershed
Treating the dynamics of sediment transport as two-dimensional on interrill-areas and as one-dimensional in rill sections, areally averaged sheet sediment transport (SST) equations are developed. The two-dimensional SST equation is averaged over
an individual interrill-area width and then along the interrill-area length to obtain local-scale areally averaged interrill-area sheet sediment transport equation (local-scale areal averaging). Similarly, the cross-sectional-averaged rill sediment transport
equation is averaged along an individual rill length to obtain local-scale areally averaged rill sediment transport equation.
The AA. report on bedload transport observations using piezoelectric bedload impact sensors (PBIS), an indirect method of estimating the volume of bedload transport of coarse sediment. Sediment transport at the Erlenbach stream has been continuously
monitored with a PBIS array starting in 1986. Sediment volumes for individual flood events estimated with the PBIS method are in agreement with volumes estimated using an independent empirical method based on the effective runoff volume of water, the peak
water discharge, and the critical discharge for the onset of sediment transport.

The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the different relations between drainage basin area (A) and area-specific sediment yield (SSY) as reported in literature, and to explore explanations for the differences in the observed trends

Important unroofed caves with fluvial sediments from Divaški kras, Matarsko podolje and Podgorski kras are presented. Extend of the phenomena and relation to the existing caves and karst surface and geomorphological meaning of them are described
. Sediments from them were analysed and dated with different methods. The largest age of the sediment was found in the unroofed cave excavated in Črnotiče quarry. In the cave wall fossil remains of stygobiont Marifugia cavatica were covered by 3.2-4.1 Ma old
