Attention is given to the role of rural roads in countering remoteness and promoting more equitable development. The paper focuses on three economic impacts of roads - agricultural production, employment, and household income. The impact of roads
varies within an area and between areas. Impacts are considerably greater when roads provide communities with access to a major urban centre compared with a small town.

Regional political criteria are considered in the directions to road network construction. These networks are regarded as planning instruments and their various spatial functions are studied in Austria, as well as the corresponding economic

In 1998 the UK government introduced a new, integrated transport policy. Labour's approach involved promoting a reduction in car use through seeking to improve public transport provision and scaling down the national trunk-road building programme
. The most recent statement of transport policy (The 10-Year Plan), makes provisions for a large programme of trunk-road construction against a background of continued traffic growth. The AA. compare the scale of trunk-road completions achieved in 1979-97

Three road financing methods that could be used by an authority faced with specifying an optimal road penetration policy are examined. Each taxation scheme leads to differing levels of benefits and patterns of spatial development. The optimal tax
type and rate are dependant on the level of road penetration, the stability and spatial structure of the market, and the degree of technological change. (Ed.).

Rainfall simulation was used to examine runoff generation and sediment transport on roads, paths and 3 types of agricultural fields in Pang Khum Experimental Watershed (PKEW), in mountainous northern Thailand. Because interception of subsurface flow
by the road prism is rare in PKEW, work focused on Horton overland flow (HOF)

The paper traces changes in attitudes towards road pricing in the European Community, both on the part of the politicians and the general public and its representative organisations, across the range of member states and their geographical
neighbours. it identifies the development of a European congestion consciousness. Important role played by municipalities. Road-pricing policy is examined.
