Is it Roslyn or is it Cicely? Representation and the ambiguity of place
Audiovisual ; Communication ; Epistemology ; Image ; Landscape ; Perception ; Place ; Semiotics of space ; Small town ; United States of America
The paper addresses the relationships between representation and place as social processes by examining the blurring of Cicely, the Alaskan town in the television show Northern Exposure, and Roslyn, the town in Washington State where outdoors scenes
of Northern Exposure are shot. The production of place-images by the entertainment industry has material repercussions for the residents of places. The relationship between R. and C. helps advance an epistemology of place.
Where the bodies lie : sense of place and police procedurals
Criminality ; Cultural studies ; Literature ; Place ; Public space
Study examines one subgenre of mystery literature - the police procedural - to convey a sense of place. It is shown that place is an essential ingredient in the commission, discovery, and resolution of crime. A. uses a number of police procedurals
to illustrate how four basic literary devices convey a sense of place : narrative description, dialogue, iconography, and attention to detail. Although the police procedural remains underutilized by academics as a source of literary geography, it is a major
source of the reading public's sense of place. - (SLD)
The promotion and consumption of artistic places in France
Art ; Attendance ; Cultural patrimony ; Cultural studies ; Enquiry ; France ; Place ; Site preservation ; Tourism ; Tourism policy
The significance of artistic places derives from links with the life of an artist or by association with the landscapes or scenes depicted in an artist's work. Particular representations of landscape in paintings have some qualities of heritage
in themselves. Artistic places are allowed to be marketed as tourist attractions. The ways in which an artistic place is consumed by visitors is questioned. Four towns in France are studied (Auvers-sur-Oise, Pont-Aven, Honfleur, Etretat).
Naming as norming: race, gender, and the identity politics of naming places in Aotearoa/New Zealand
Cultural studies ; Ethnic community ; New Zealand ; Place ; Place names ; Semiotics of space ; Social group ; Territorial identity
Place-names are part of the social construction of space and the symbolic construction of meanings about place. The names applied to places in Aotearoa assist in the construction of the symbolic and material orders that legitimate the dominance
of a hegemonic Pakeha masculinism. The contestation of place-names in Otago/Murihicu is examined. The AA. present a discursive analysis of submissions made to New Zealand Geographic Board in 1989-90 concerning a proposed reinstatement of Maori names in the area.

Cultural landscape ; England ; Inner city ; London ; Perception of the urban environment ; Place ; Social class ; Territorial identity ; United Kingdom ; Urban district

and class intersect in the construction of place identities.

The spatial organization of a regional economy: central places in North-west England in the early-eighteenth century

Using probate records as a source of occupation titles, a detailed picture of the service industries of the urban system of North-west England is drawn up and analysed against various models of central place systems. A well-developed and structured
