This paper deals with the history of central place theory, as conceived by Walter Christaller in 1993, in regional science and spatial planning. Based on the distinction of five phases of development, the scientific history of the central place theory is reconstructed. Special emphasis is given to the discussion in geography. Amongst other things, the belated adoption and the differences in empirical and theoretical research between German-speaking countrees and North America will be dealt with. This discussion is followed by an analogous examination of the development of the central place concept in (West) German spatial planning. - (MT)
