Converting minerals to merchandise : landownership and environmental alteration in the George's Creek Valley of western Maryland

Auteur :
BUCKLEY, G.

Description :
The assault on the environment of the southern Appalachians began in western Maryland toward the end of the eighteenth century. Author documents how land consolidation by speculators there preceded exploitation by the George's Creek Coal and Iron Company, the first company to mine on a large-scale in the region. GCCandI Co., chartered in 1836, reached its peak production in 1907. Pollution of George's Creek and deforestation is discussed. - (SLD)
