Description :
Botanical identification of construction timbers is used to suggest different historio-geographical developments of two nearby Palestinian port cities, Haifa and Acre. Fragments of wood samples were taken from every wooden element of seventy buildings in Acre and forty-two in Haifa. In Acre, 75 % of the timbers were local or East Mediterranean in origin, mostly Cedar of Lebanon and Calabrian Pine. In Haifa, 60 % of the timbers were European, mostly Scots Pine, Common Larch and Atlas Cedar. The reasons for the differences are discussed. - (SLD)
