Violence and insecurity in Latin America are considered as typical urban phenomena, highly concentrated in the large agglomerations. Apart from the dimensions and forms of violence and their spatial differentiations, the relations between local governance and criminal organizations/gangs are in the focus of attention as well as - like a result of these processes - the political-territorial fragmentation. The perception of violence by the urban population contributes considerably to the opinion, whether the “City of Fear” represents a realistic future vision of Latin American megacities. - (IfL)
