This paper describes an attempt at the reconstruction of the post-2000 organisational and ownership changes characterising Poland’s rail transport enterprises. It has two parts, of which the first – presented here – discusses the organisational changes and the emergence of new carriers in the transporting of freight by normal-gauge railways. The second part – due to appear in Przegląd Geograficzny of 2011, 83, 2 – will deal with the carriage of passengers by standard-gauge railways, as well as standard-gauge rail transport. – (BJ)
