The essence of the theoretical transformation ongoing in rural geography reflects deep thought given to the concept of the ‘rural area’ and ‘rurality’ in new economic-political and social conditions, as well as extensive reflection on the relationships linking rural geography and human geography, especially from the point of view of the development of critical trends. The main objective set in this paper has been to present the influence of social theories in extending the scope of research questions being tackled and in developing geographical concepts of rural research, in particular new methods of interpreting social and economic phenomena in rural areas. – (BJ)
