The influence of Shanghai urban development on temperature.
Meteorological data covering a period of 105 years (1875-1979) is analysed to show the influence of urban development on temperature in Shanghai. Urban development is reflected by population density and energy consumption increases. The rising trend
in long-term annual mean temperature is depicted with special emphasis on urban and rural differences. The urban heat island effect on annual minimum temperature was more obvious than on the annual mean temperature. (TNC).

Physical development of infants as an indicator of the condition of the urban environment
Differences in the weight of infants at birth among a sample of 24 contrasting Moscow neighborhoods are used as a mesure of urban environmental impacts. Although differences between neighborhoods turn out to be within the norm, they do reflect
differences in the urban environment. For example, the mean weight at birth in an industrial neighborhood is found to be lower than in a neighborhood where education and science are the principal activities. (Ed.).
