Physical development of infants as an indicator of the condition of the urban environment

Differences in the weight of infants at birth among a sample of 24 contrasting Moscow neighborhoods are used as a mesure of urban environmental impacts. Although differences between neighborhoods turn out to be within the norm, they do reflect differences in the urban environment. For example, the mean weight at birth in an industrial neighborhood is found to be lower than in a neighborhood where education and science are the principal activities. (Ed.).
