This paper reports on properties of soils on two contiguous hillslopes, spanning over 1000 m from upper to lower slope positions. The objective was to determine catenary related variation in soil properties and to interpret pedogenesis on the two

and plant cover. The results presented in this paper are specific for restricted areas in different slope situations: soils of the catena developed from mica shists of the upper hillslopes, fan deposits of the lower hillslopes, and an alluvial terrace
Runoff and infiltration were investigated on abandoned fields of patchy vegetation in semi-arid Spain during 15 months of natural rainfall and by rainfall simulations. The aim was to ascertain sources and sinks of runoff and the effects of soils

The AA. relate the amounts and distribution of P to the nodule content, chemical properties and development stage of soils along a hillslope in northern Ghana with the objective of determining the factors that influence P fertility with respect
The AA. present examples of inversion of relief: in volcanic areas, associated with duricrusts, silcrete, ferricrete, calcrete, gypcrete. They study the implications of inversion of relief for catenas, hydrology, geochemical landscapes and landscape
Quelques concepts de géochimie sont discutés : zonation redoxe, barrières géochimiques dans les sols, différenciation géochimique chez la migration latérale et organisation des catenas. Les principes d'une systématique de chaînes de sols

This study examined the magnitude and range of soil erodibility over a series of transects, and focussed on its association with slope position and other topographic variables. The relationship of several basic soil properties to topography
and to erodibility was also considered. One purpose of the study was to evaluate the possible impact that variation in soil erodibility with topography has on soil erosion patterns in the landscape.

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the role of termites as soil forming agent in the tropical semi-deciduous forest. This is done by describing soil profiles, and by analysing soil samples from the soil profiles as well as soil material
The AA. examined the variation of soil properties with altitude in a soilcatena of an inter-tropical mountain range, Fan Si Pan Mountain, in the north of Vietnam. It is observed that the soil carbon mineralization depends not only on temperature

Soil organic carbon (SOC) in a humid subtropical forest in Puerto Rico is higher at ridge locations compared to valleys, and therefore opposite to what is commonly observed in other forested hillslope catenas. To better understand the spatial
distribution of SOC in this system, plots previously characterized by topographic position, vegetation type and stand age were related to soil depth and SOC. Additional factors were also investigated, including topographically-related differences in litter
dynamics and soil chemistry. To investigate the influence of litter dynamics, the Century soil organic model was parameterized to simulate the effect of substituting valley species for ridge species. Soil chemical controls on C concentrations were

Soils along catenas of Pinedale and Bull Lake at Whiskey Basin, in the Wind River Range, were sampled to assess the effects of aeolian processes on soil development. Aeolian processes appear to have influenced soils by both depositing sediments
and eroding topsoils. Pedogenic silt (often used as an indicator of wind deposition) accumulated in the Bluff Lake soils moderately correlate with pedogenic clay accummulated, suggesting that fine sediments may have been deposited and incorporated into soil
formation here. The AA. suggest that aeolian modification of soils also can be demonstrated on moraines at Whiskey Basin.

Predicting the soil erosion response requires consideration of both direct and indirect influences of climate. Models of climate change provide input data about temperature, rainfall and wind strength, but the indirect influences of climate
represented through changes in land use, crop selection and farming practice will be more difficult to predict. Approaches to the forecasting of prospective soil erosion must focus at the interaction between affected environmental processes and human-induced

In the Gavarras (NE Spain), a large number of plots on respective schists, leucogranite and granodiorite was studied for their soils and vegetation. Results are discussed, focusing on properties of humus forms and underlying mineral horizons which
are relevant for the susceptibility of these soils to erosion and degradation.
