Zum Begriff Polare Wüste. (About the term Polar Desert)
Geography of polar regions
The term Polar desert is being discussed. An examination of the basic factors like climate, vegetation, weathering and erosial processes shows a distinct aridity in different parts of the polar zones. In the field of human geography there are also
some important features, typical of deserts, as for instance specific distribution of population, socioeconomic structures and economic revenues. Summing up, the polar zones are not deserts in the whole but within these zones there exist local deserts

Mesoscale analysis of a polar trough interacting with a polar front
The interaction of a polar trough with a polar front can lead to a characteristic satellite cloud pattern commonly referred to as an instant occlusion. The AA. refer to it under the name of pseudo-occlusion. A conceptual model of the pseudo
-occlusion is developed in which the key elements are (1) a moist, relatively warm, low-level jet associated with the polar trough, and (2) a major upper-level jet streak associated with the polar front. The polar trough conveyor belt and the polar front
Vergleich verschiedener Polkoordinatensysteme. (Comparison of different polar-coordinate systems)
The main components of the polar motion were calculated for six different systems from the polar coordinates from 1969,00 to 1981,95. A comparing estimation shows that the parameters of the polar motion, determined by different methods, in addition
Research projects of the International Polar Years
International Polar Years have been focal points for research activities among geoscientists. Over the past 120 years they have contributed to a better understanding and public awareness about the role the polar regions play in the earth's climate
. The 1st International Polar Year took place in 1882-1883 and was devoted to circum-Arctic meteorological and magnetic measurements. They were repeated during the 2nd IPY (1932-1933) in a much denser network. The International Geophysical Year (1957-1958
) focused on Antarctica and the investigation of the high atmosphere. The forthcoming 4th IPY (2007-2008) will deal with both polar regions and, for the first time, includes the participation of the indigenous people. - (IfL)
Modes of synoptic development within the Polar Basin
The patterns of advective development are classified for twelve synoptic sequences in the Polar Basin during the June through October interval of 1979. The intent is to develop models of the advective contribution to synoptic evolution.

This paper synthesizes the regional results and thereby characterizes the thermal state of permafrost for the polar regions of the Northern Hemisphere at the end of the Fourth International Polar Year (IPY) : North America, Nordic region and Russia
. A comparison is also made between the current state and previous ground thermal conditions in order to characterize longer-term changes. Improved knowledge about the permafrost thermal state is important for multidisciplinary polar research. Increased
