This is a pioneer work to carry out a detailed study of sea ice pressure ridges in the BalticSea. The results are based on field measurements. They include measurements of such as the inside structure of ridges and the orientation of ice blocks
in the ridges sails. The aim of this paper is to serve as a basic information about the structure, morphology and distribution of the pressure ridges in the BalticSea. The results are compared with the information about the ridges in the Arctic Seas.
This study provides new observational data of coastal development and sea-level change for the BalticSea region, and aims to test the applicability of geochemical tracers. Specific attention is given to 1) compositional variations within the Oder
BalticSea ; Europe ; Maritime traffic ; Network ; Russia ; Sea transport ; Transport
Seen from a maritime point of view, the BalticSea is a narrow and shallow sea basin, being used by at least three basic kinds of freight navigation: 1. freight shipping lines (short and medium distance service within the BalticSea), 2. container
transport integration, whereas the container services mainly establish extra-Baltic integration with several external deep-sea ports on the North Sea coast. Presently, East Asian export boom and Russian oil export wave geographically meet in the BalticSea
feeder lines (mainly based on some big ports like Hamburg and Bremerhaven), 3. oil tankers (serving Russian oil export interests). These circles have little connections with one another. The close network of freight lines contributes to intra-Baltic
Relative sea-level development and isostasy along the NE German BalticSea coast during the past 9 ka
BalticSea ; C 14 dating ; Coastal geomorphology ; Germany ; Holocene ; Isostasy ; Mire ; Palaeogeography ; Sea level ; Stratigraphy
The article deals with the relative sea-level, the isostasy, the sea-level fluctuations, the coastal mires, the macrofossils and the radiocarbon dating at BalticSea in North Eastern Germany. After a short geographic setting and data acquisition
the authors describe three case studies, the Körkwitz study site (mire Fischland located of the Saaler Bodden), the Augustenhof study site (small coastal mire located at the Großer Jasmunder Bodden) and the Wismar study site at the NE Germany BalticSea
Grundzüge der regionalen und physikalischen Ozeanologie der Ostsee. (Fundamentals of the regional and physical oceanology of the BalticSea)
Starting from the economic importance and ecologic leading of the BalticSea at first a hydrographic characterization of the relative shallow border-sea of the Atlantic Ocean is given. Explained in detail are further at the actual tasks
of the physical ocean-research in the Baltic area. Three spheres of action are emphasized: ascertainment of the horizontal water exchange in the area of Darss-Ridge| quantitative definition of the vertical interchange between surface and deep water: modelling
A compilation of 93 sedimentation rate determinations based on Pb 210 dating has been carried out for the North Sea - BalticSea transition area from a database containing 165 determinations carried out by Danish institutions. Sedimentationrates
significantly increase with depth indicating that the Skagerrak and northern part of the Kattegat as well as the deep basins in the BalticSea act as depocenters for fine-grained sediments. Apparently, sedimentation rates have increased in recent years.
Die Wärmezyklonen der westlichen und mittleren Ostsee. (The warm cyclones of the western and middle BalticSea)
The genesis of warm cyclones is one of the most intense weather developments in the southern region of the BalticSea. The author describes typical warm-LOW situations and the synoptic-climatological experiences formulated as synoptic rules along
Charakteristik der chemischen und biologischen Ozeanologie der Ostsee. (Characterization of chemical and biological oceanology of the BalticSea)
Because of hydrographic peculiarities of the BalticSea the ecosystem of this area is especially susceptible to anthropogenic influences. In connection with the increasing bioproductivity and the endangerment of the ecological equilibrium
the seasonal changes of the chemical and biological conditions in the surface layer, the long term changes of the chemical conditions in the stagnating deep water and long-term trends of chemical and biological processes in the BalticSea are discussed. (HL).
Strategies and priorities for cores and peripheries in the BalticSea region : territorial cohesion and polycentricity
Accessibility ; BalticSea ; Core-periphery ; International cooperation ; Polycentrism ; Territorial strategy ; Transport ; Urban development ; Urban policy
In this study, we explore these core-periphery patterns in the BalticSea Region (BSR) and discuss the potentials and challenges of the BSR for achieving the goal of territorial cohesion and by means of the policy instruments of polycentric urban
the Polish BalticSea. The first part of the paper examines long-term and seasonal fluctuations of sea level, then the paper discusses the matter of amplitudes, and the final part analyses the appearance of high water levels and storm surges during the year.
This work, based upon the results of 4 tide-gauges : Władysławowo, Hel, Gdynia and Gdansk-Harbour, presents the relative changes of sea level and a determination of its quantitative and qualitative variability in the eastern part of the coast along
Rannansiirtymisestä ja rannikon kehityksestä Piikkiossä morfologian perusteella Shoreline displacement of the BalticSea in Piikkio, SW Finland on the basis of morphology
This study describes the spatial distribution of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the North Sea-BalticSea transition in autumn 2002 based on cruises in August, September, and October. The cruises comprised CTD and optical backscatter
Late Weichselian and Holocene shore displacement history of the BalticSea in Finland
BalticSea ; Biostratigraphy ; Coastal environment ; Digital elevation model ; Finland ; Geographical information system ; Glacial isostasy ; Holocene ; Palaeogeography ; Sea level
Brief overview of the main stages in the history of the BalticSea and their influence on the pattern of shore displacement in Finland. The technique employed for constructing the palaeogeographical maps of Finland is based on a digital elevation
model (DEM) for the entire country. The model can be intersected by different surfaces in accordance with the water level that prevailed in the Baltic at each stage. The contour-based DEM was constructed by the National Land Survey, and it has horizontal
The AA. discuss the results of diatom analyses of 4 cores located in different marine settings of the Skagerrat-Kattegat. The AA. focus on how meltwater from the Baltic Ice Lake influenced the oceanography of the Skagerrak-Kattegat. The meltwater
influence on the large area of the Skagerrak during the Younger Dryas was, however, restricted along the Norwegian coast where it flowed into the Norwegian Sea.

The large-scale atmospheric sea-level pressure field over Europe and the North Atlantic has been downscaled by means of canonical analysis or redundancy analysis to some local climatic and oceanographic fields on the Polish coast of the BalticSea
. These local fields are : wind at coastal stations; the wave field on the southern Baltic; air temperature on the coast; and salinity in the coastal zone. Scenarios concerning the future evolution of the local systems have been developed using results of some
Regional climate change for the BalticSea is discussed first, with particular emphasis on recent findings for sea level (mean and extrema) and storm intensity. More thought is being given to the general problem of land (primarily arable
) degradation due to extended landward penetration of sea water due to the accelerated sea level rise (ASLR). Long-term coastline change is analysed on the basis of routine topographic and bathymetric data collected. Assessment of coast vulnerability to ASLR has
of the study area coincides with industrialization inland and with the construction of the artificial mouth of the Wisła. The results obtained from the sedimentary record of the Gulf of Gdańsk are compared with those from other areas within the BalticSea.
