Starting from the economic importance and ecologic leading of the Baltic Sea at first a hydrographic characterization of the relative shallow border-sea of the Atlantic Ocean is given. Explained in detail are further at the actual tasks of the physical ocean-research in the Baltic area. Three spheres of action are emphasized: ascertainment of the horizontal water exchange in the area of Darss-Ridge| quantitative definition of the vertical interchange between surface and deep water: modelling of the dynamic processes in the sea.
