Description :
Three pilot studies were carried out in South China to clarify generation, spatial variation and temporal change of land degradation. They represented a variety of physiographical environments and human activities : Lanxi County, Zhejiang Province, red clay, low hills; both Jixi County, Anhui Province and Wuhua County, Guangdong Province, weathered granite, mountain regions. It was showed by comparing maps of land degradation between the 1950s and the 1980s that changes of land degradation varied from one area to another because of differencies of human activities, including land reclamation and vegetation depletion.
