In this paper, the author review findings on the structure of inter-regional migration flows in European countries, identifying the importance of distinguishing between patterns related to the organization of settlement systems and patterns relating to the success or failure of regional economies. Examination of the relationship between migration and unemployment then forms the focus of the remainder of the paper. The classical views of the relationship are outlined. Then empirical evidence is examined in a set of West European countries and a set of countries in transition. - (L'A.).
