This article attempts to understand the post-1970 changes in European regional population redistribution through a survey of the literature. There are three objectives : to characterize internal population redistribution patterns in Europe during the 1970s and 1980s, to discuss explanations given for these changing patterns and to evaluate internal redistribution during the 1990s, and attempt to ascertain if European patterns suggest a new migration turnaround or counter-urbanization trend. - (MT)
