Rapid ice margin fluctuations during the Younger Dryas in the tropical Andes

Description :
Stratigraphy and radiocarbon ages from an exposed late glacial lake basin on the western side of the Cordillera Blanca, and a basal radiocarbon age from a lake on the northwesternside of the Quelccaya Ice Cap clarify the timing of a major glacier readvance in the tropical Andes during the late glacial, beyween 11,280 and 10,900 C 14 B.P.; rapid ice recession followed. The Younger Dryas in the Peruvian Andes was apparently marked by retreating ice fronts in spite of the cool conditions that are inferred from the δO 18 record of Sajama ice. This retreat was apparently driven by reduced precipitation.
