Presentation of a classification of the gminas within Poland’s Mazowieckie voivodship, that is based around two overriding premises : (1) the deductive selection of categories of unit from the point of view of defined features or properties, and (2) an inductive method-based division of these categories of unit into sub-categories in line with internal differentiation present. The goal of the classification is taken to be the achievement of a division including categories displaying genuine differences in administrative and settlement-related terms, functionally and morphologically. The classification presented is universal in its characteristics, creating opportunities, not only for further and fuller differentiation within the set, but also for linking up into other aggregates. It would also seem to have uses where the monitoring of socio-economic development is concerned. – (BJ)
