Description :
All over the world, societies traditionally dominated by pastoral activities have increasingly become subject to far reaching transformations and partial disintegration, including complete or near total break-up of nomadic systems. Tibetan nomadism is no exception in this regard, but seen against the backdrop of modern Tibetan history, the changes are usually attributed to the official dictates of the Chinese state. But the problems resulting from a changing climate, from a growing population and from the increasing globalization do not spare the pastoralist society on the roof of the world. In that nomads themselves are developing their own strategies of how to determine the changes in their living space, in the ecological, economical and social spheres is often underestimated. What kind of changes take place, how are they dealt with and what unique resource Tibetan pastoralists have come to rely on is the topic of this article. - (IfL)
