Description :
Almost all of the Ukraine was conquered by the Wehrmacht and Romanian troops between June and November 1941. However, no unified administration was installed, instead four occupation structures existed : firstly the Western Reichskommissariat Ukraine, secondly the left-bank from military administration, thirdly Eastern from Galicia and finally the Southern from the Romanian. Though Ukrainians were to be treated preferably in comparison to Russian, only low-level collaboration in local administration, auxiliary police and as Wehrmacht auxiliaries was permitted. As envisaged prior to the attack, the Ukraine was to serve as the central source of provisions for the Wehrmacht. More than 2 million citizens were deported as forced labourers to Germany in 1942. 1.5 million Jews of Ukraine were exterminated ruthlessly. When Red Army retook the Ukraine between spring 1943 and spring 1944, the area was heavily destroyed. - (IfL)
