Description :
After the disintegration of Soviet power in 1991, Ukraine hoped to regain its former status as the breadbasket of Europe. In the ensuing years, the introduction of economic reforms in the countryside included efforts to restructure collective and state farms and privatize agricultural land. The transformation of collective and state farms in Ukraine involved two steps : the reorganization of collectives to create private forms of ownership and management ; and the allotment of land for the creation of smaller private farms. What are the implications of these new property rights for rural populations ? And what are their repercussions for sustainable development in Ukraine ? - (IfL)
