This study’s deliberations evaluate possibilities for works of art to be used as a source of knowledge in geographical research, as well as to describe a model for the conveying of information between artist and recipient (viewer or reader). However, to serve as a source of knowledge in geographical studies, a work of art work must fulfill several fundamental conditions. While there are a wide variety of arts, a particular role from the point of view of geographical studies is played by plastic arts (primarily painting), literature (belles-lettres) and film. These forms of art have a documentary character overall, in that they depict a portion of geographical space in the historical past. – (BJ)
