The paper reviews contemporary changes to the forest cover on mountains around world. These changes reflect the complex, dynamic relationships between society, the economy and land resources, and are also linked to a range of driving factors reflecting land use and land cover change and biophysical constraints. This paper discusses three processes to land-cover conversion in mountain area ; i.e. deforestation, afforestation and natural forest expansion, within the framework of a forest transition model which attempts to explain the phase-change from deforestation and a decrease in forest cover to forest expansion and an increase in the area of forest. - (BJ)
