The state and perspectives of polish geography in the opinion of geographers

The article contains a characterisation of the condition of Polish geography at the beginning of the new millennium, including as regards its main thematic areas, searching approach, preferred methods, theoretical and methodological problems. It also shows contemporary trends in the development of geography, using results of geographical research in Poland and in the world, estimating the position of contemporary geography in the face of other disciplines. On this basis the article presents the most important weaknesses of, prospects for and threats to contemporary Polish geography and its place in world geography. In conclusion, the article shows the main directions of research which should be preferred in Polish geography. Investigations of the subject have been confirmed by an anonymous questionnaire, and were made in the period from May to 2001. - (BJ)
