Description :
Different dating methods for mass movements used by researchers of the MABIS-Project are presented and evaluated. Due to subjective criteria, and because of different geologic and petrographic conditions, problems remain with a classification based on morphometric attributes. Historical sources and dendrogeomorphology are useful only for dating very young landslide events. Absolute dating methods and paleontologic classifications (pollen analysis, macroflora, fauna) are preferable for older mass movements. Precise dating allows identification of climatically controlled periods of activity and, it may allow predictions of future landslides.
