Attempts to describe how the geographical patterns associated with traditional, colonial, and post-colonial assessment of Papua New Guinea's resources have been established, have interacted, and contradict one another. Whilst considerable stress and dysfunction already exist between the modern and traditional modes of resource evaluation, the paper foreshadows even greater conflict as the modern state attempts to exert greater control, particularly through the transformation of agriculture.
