Ethnic separatism in Western Europe

Auteur :
WILLIAMS, C. H.

Description :
The core-periphery paradigm of state integration is reviewed and attention is focused on ethnic political mobilization in the periphery, highlighting separatism as a mechanism for alleviating ethnic-regional grievances. Illustration is provided with reference to the ideological rationale and socio-cultural basis of Welsh Nationalism. A number of theses designed to explain this feature of ethnic resurgence are examined and the Internal Colonial model is criticized as being overdependent on the premise of capitalism's uneven development producing ethnic separatist movements in the peripheral regions of Western Europe.
