The article describes the steps in modernizing the Austro-Hungarian General Survey and, later on the Austrian General Survey by means of applying the Gauss-Krueger projection since the beginning of the 20th century. After a series of laborious negotiations a project for a simultanous implementation of the Gauss-Krueger projection was formulated. The draft of this agreement in German and Hungarian was accepted in Budapest on 25th July 1917. Although there was no formal ratification due to political and military problems just before the end of the First World War, this agreement laid the foundations for the further modernization of cartography in Central Europe and especially with respect to the Austrian General Survey.
