In this paper the AA. report recent discoveries of wood from several glacier forefields in the Canadian Rockies that provide conclusive evidence of the timing and extent of a mid-Neoglacial glacier advance that was less extensive than
The purpose of this paper is to report on glaciological investigations carried out at a single glacier in this region, the Rae Glacier. In 1990 and 1991 field research was completed to describe the physical glaciology of Rae Glacier
and to characterize historical glaciological trends at the site. The glacier has a lag time of 5 to 10 years, which confirms that it is sensitive to climatic fluctuations and responds to changes in mass balance within a very short time. This observation is supported

Discharge and sediment-load characteristics of the Hilda rock-glacier stream, Canadian Rocky Mountains, Alberta

Water discharge and sediment load characteristics of the Hilda rock-glacier stream are described for portions of the 1985 and 1986 ablation seasons. The hydrological behavior of the Hilda rock-glacier stream suggests that the rock glacier acts
as a buffering factor in basin runoff as compared with a similar glacierized basin. In addition, the rock glacier acts conservatively in sediment release from the basin and promotes denudation by dissolution and material transport as dissolved load.

Tree rings were used to reconstruct mass balance for Peyto Glacier in the Canadian Rocky Mountains from A.D. 1673 to 1994. In this paper, the AA. present the firts attempt to derive a mass-balance record from independently estimated summer
and winter balances for a glacier. For the Canadian Rockies, they provide the only continuous record of glacier changes through the past three centuries and the latter part of the LIA for this region.

The results of this dendrogeomorphological study provide evidence of the active movement of Hilda rock glacier. The samples were crossdated using locally and regionally developed tree-ring chronologies, and were shown to have been killed between
1576 and 1999. The results show that Hilda rock glacier has advanced at an average rate of 1.6 cm/year since the late 1790s, with limited evidence of similar rates of activity extending back to the mid-1570s. This rock glacier activity is believed
to be linked to persistent periglacial processes that appear to be independent to the climatic forcing mechanisms known to influence glacier mass balances over the same interval.
This paper reviews the evidence and history of glacier fluctuations during the Little Ice Age (LIA) in the Canadian Rockies. Episodes of synchronous glacier advance occurred in the 12th-13th, early 18th and throughout the 19th centuries. The glacier
with more realistic records based on continuous proxy data series. The use of the term LIA should be restricted to describing a period of extended glacier cover.

Evidence indicates that Laurentide and Rocky Mountain piedmont glaciers coalesced in the Willow Creek drainage east of Glacier National Park. Based on relative soil development, alpine tills in the North Fork of the Milk River could be two ages
in unstable proglacial environments. In particular, granite erratics, probably ice-rafted, commonly mantle landforms not constructed by the Laurentide glacier(s).
Climate data as well as proxy records (fluctuations of glaciers and treelines) are presented to document change at various time-scales. Problems and possibilities of this two-pronged approach in studying future environmental change. - (DWG)

Modelling of icecap glaciation of the northern Rocky Mountains of Montana

The extent of the lastglacial icecap over the northern Rocky Mountains of Montana has been inferred only from cursory correlation of its marginal deposits, which leaves several significant unresolved controversies. Those controversies all involve
A rhomboidal shaped rockslide covers 30% of a small Clemenceau Icefield Group cirque glacier. By means of remote sensing, airborne photography, climate and seismic data analysis, the extent, timing, possible trigger mechanisms, and rockslide effects
on the glacier are discussed. An ML 2·0 seismic event on 14 September2000 represents the rockslide. Shear stress and a combination of rain and snow followed by rapid melt and night-time freezing could have co-triggered the slide. Rockslide characteristics
indicate that this rockslide is quite typical for long-runout rockslides on glaciers. Apart from reduced ablation under the rock debris, effects of the rockslide on the glacier were minimal.

During the 1960s, several surveying networks were established on rock glaciers located in the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. During, the summer of 2002, the A. re-established surveying networks, and obtained a 40-plus year record
of flow. Rates of flow have remained consistent and suggest that rock glaciers in the Front Range are adjusted to the current climate, unlike some rock glaciers in the European Alps. The rock glaciers, however are not in a permanent steady state
