The state of Yucatan has seen a large incrase in the number of export-oriented plants since 1985 due to combination of cheap labor and good accessibility to US markets. Long-term benefits of these factories are questioned. - (DWG)

It is the aim of this paper to present a brief background of human occupation of the fragile coastal environment of north Yucatan, in particular the impact of tourism development. Both the physical and cultural landscapes of the N Yucatan coast
are distinct from those of the E coast of Yucatan, and this may explain differences in both the impacts of and recovery rates from Hurricane Gilbert.
Here, the AA. report a continuous oxygen isotopic record from Aguada X'caamal in northwestern Yucatan for the past 2600 yr. They found an important change in the hydrology of Aguada X'caamal in the mid-15th century. By comparing Aguada X'caamal
to other links sediment and historical records in Mesoamerica, they conclude that climate became drier on the Yucatan Peninsula near the start of the Little Ice Age, LIA.

This article explores local Yucatecan politicking and the Yucatecan–Mexican relationship at the time of independence, using Yucatán's pronunciamiento for independence in September 1821. It highlights the fact that, while local ambitions played
a significant role in Yucatán's bid for independence, this did not necessarily detract from Yucatecans' attempts to not only engage with national political movements, but also to unite with Mexico. This in turn will take further historians' recent attempts
to revise the traditional perception of Yucatán as one of the more pro-autonomous and isolated states of early nineteenth-century Mexico.

Climate variability on the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) during the past 3500 years, and implications for Maya cultural evolution
This study reconstructs climate variability on the Yucatan Peninsula during the late Holocene (last 3310 C 14 yr) by measuring oxygen isotopes of ostracod and gastropod shells from sediments of Lake Punta Laguna, Quintana Roo. The paleoclimate
