Analysis of the wind regime in context of dune geomorphology for the Kumtagh Desert, Northwest China
- Analysis of the wind regime in context of dune geomorphology for the Kumtagh Desert, Northwest China
- Aeolian features ; Arid area ; China ; Desert ; Dune ; Earth surface processes ; Wind speed ; Xinjiang
- Based on field observations, the AA. analyzed the wind regime of China's Kumtagh Desert. The wind regime can be characterized based on both the mean wind speeds and the drift potential. The mean wind speed varied both spatially and temporally
- of an intermediate-energy wind environment, and the index of directional variability is also intermediate. The diversity of local dune geomorphology should be associated with the complexity of the wind regime in each part of the region. However, the general
- understanding of the desert's wind regime provided in this paper is not yet adequate to clarify the precise relationships between wind regime and dune geomorphology.

- A portable wind and rainfall simulator for in situ soil erosion measurements

- The aim of this study was to specify the wind and rainfall characteristics of the developed Portable Wind and Rainfall Simulator (PWRS) and to evaluate if its simulation quality and reproducibility is adequate for comparative soil erosion studies
- in the field. Test results of the PWRS are very satisfactory. The analysis presented in this study suggests in particular very good reproducibility of wind and rain conditions. The PWRS should therefore be a useful device for comparative in situ soil erosion
- measurements in the field and support the gathering of quantitative data on the relative importance of soil detachment rates between wind and water erosion, as well as windless and wind-driven rainfall.

- Wind direction and complex sediment transport response across a beach–dune system
- Aeolian features ; Aeolian transport ; Canada ; Coastal dynamics ; Coastal environment ; Conceptual model ; Dune ; Maritime Province ; Prince Edward Island ; Topography ; Wind
- A field study was undertaken at the Greenwich Dunes, Price Edward Island, Canada. A conceptual model is proposed which shows how near-surface wind vectors are altered for 4 regional wind conditions : (a) onshore, detached; (b) onshore-oblique
- equations driven by regional wind statistics would by unreliable and misleading. It is recommended that field studies routinely implement experimental designs that treat the near-surface wind field as comprising true vector quantities (with speed
- and direction) in order that a more robust linkage between the regional (upper air) wind field and the sediment transport response across the beach-dune profile be established.

- The influence of local topography for wind direction on Mars : two examples of dune fields in crater basins
- Aeolian features ; Aeolian landform ; Dune ; Geomorphology ; Impact ; Mars planet ; Topography ; Wind
- morphology and slip faces, the AA. conclude that the studied dune fields are influenced by topographically-controlled complex wind directions. Their morphological analysis reveals that inside Moreux Crater in particular, the topographic setting dominates
- the wind flow direction, leading to the development of a sand transport pathway encircling the central peak of the crater. The dune fields in Herschel Crater are also affected by winds controlled by variable topography as suggested by the presence
- of complex dunes and dune fields. This analysis indicate that the studied dune systems is not the result of paleo-wind regimes.

- The field experiment was undertaken at Greenwich Dunes, Prince Edward Island National Park, Canada. Wind flow and sand transport intensity were measured on the seaward slope of a vegetated foredune during a 16 h storm using an array of sonic
- anemometers and Wenglor laser particle counters. Sand transport was initially inhibited by a brief period of rain at the start of the event but as the surface dried and wind speed increased sand transport was initiated over the entire seaward slope. Transport
- intensity was quite variable both temporally and spatially on the upper slope as a result of fluctuating wind speed and direction, but overall magnitudes were similar over the whole length. Transport on the beach for onshore winds is decoupled from
- that on the seaward slope above the small scarp when the wind angle is highly oblique, but for wind angles

- This paper makes a methodological proposal regarding the regional-scale (1:50,000–1:200,000) assessment of environmental conditions in respect of the locating of wind farms. The necessity for such strategic assessment reflects ongoing
- intensification of the pressure wind farms are exerting on the Polish environment. 48 assessment criteria have ultimately been proposed here, on the basis of binding legal provisions and elements of good practice in spatial planning and environmental protection
- . The identification and qualification of the criteria in question as either precluding or restricting to varying degrees the founding of wind farms may be helpful where the optimization of the location planning process is concerned. – (BJ)

- The AA. analyze a dark erg on Mars that could be considered a mega-dune (draa) where secondary dunes of different morphology are superposed over a main crescent-shaped bedform (primary dune). The presence of a complex, multi-directional wind regime
- is indicated as one of the main causes for the accumulation of a tall draa, presenting an analogy to the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado. In both cases, main regional winds from the SW blow in opposition to winds from the NE which are enhanced by the topography
- . Such a complex wind regime leads to the development of star and reversing dunes and is accurately predicted by atmospheric models on a regional and local scale. Signs of activity in the form of grainflow scars are also noted over the slip faces of many dunes
- , suggesting that easterly winds are actively shaping the study draa in the present-day climatic setting. The presence of this draa on Mars suggests a complex interaction between regional and local topographically controlled flows and a consistent availability

- Simulations of spatial variability in particle-size emissions during wind erosion events
- Aeolian dust ; Aeolian features ; Australia ; Grain size distribution ; Model ; Playa ; Scenario ; South Australia ; Spatial variation ; Wind erosion
- This study simulates how spatial variations in particle-size emissions from a playa affect bulk and size-resolved dust concentration profiles during 2 contrasting wind erosion events (a small local and a large regional event) in the Channel Country
- , Lake Eyre Basin, Australia. The regional event had higher dust concentration as a result of stronger frontal winds and higher erodibility across the playa. For each event, 2 emission scenarios are simulated to determine if measured size-resolved dust
- between and within source areas. The results suggest that the contribution of each particle-size to the total emitted dusts is not related to wind speed and turbulence.

- Proxy evidence for easterly winds in glacial Lake Algonquin, from the Black River Delta in Northern Lower Michigan
- and also carried there on longshore currents. A clear sediment plume of medium and finer sands also traverses the delta SE to NW, which is interpreted as evidence of sand transport by longshore currents flowing east to west, driven by easterly winds. High
- , perched spits on the head of the delta also suggest westerly longshore drift. These paleoclimate proxy data support previous interpretations of strong easterly winds here during the Late Pleistocene, probably in association with a glacial anticyclone.

- agreement is found. Measurements in a wind tunnel using sieved natural sand indicate that the webcam can be used to infer additional information about the grain size. As an application, the fluid and impact thresholds for aeolian sand transport
- are investigated in field measurements by analysing the onset and breakdown of saltation in gust and lull intervals of rising and falling wind speeds, respectively. In this way, constitutive equations for sand transport in terms of the wind speed can be tested.
