Soil/sediment relationships from the West Fork of Gallegos Canyon near Farmington, to the Manuelito Plateau northwest of Gallup, provide insight into the Late Pleistocene and Holocene history of the north-central to southwestern San Juan Basin. Soil

The AA. present measurements of variations in the carbon and oxygen isotope compositions of shells of modern land snails from the southern Great Plains of North America : 12 localities in a narrow east-west corridor that extend from the Flint Hills
in NorthCentral Oklahoma to the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Northern New Mexico, USA. The data are discussed in terms of their relationship to modern environmental variables to examine the likelihood that isotopic data from ancient land

the Midwest and is earlier in the north and later in the south.

and the centroid of the ranges. Conservation of tallgrass, mixed-grass, and shortgrass prairie biomes will require a flexible strategy with widely distributed habitat over the Great Plains along both north-south and east-west gradients.
The AA. examined the spatial distributions of 30 abundant plant species of the grasslands of North America distributed among 4 functional groups : C4 grasses, C3 grasses, forbs, and woody species. For each species, they mapped its distribution using

The mountain West: interpreting the folk landscape
Civilization ; Cultural landscape ; Cultural studies ; Ethnic community ; Innovation ; Rural house ; Rural landscape ; United States of America ; Western United States
Wooden constructions - dwellings, outbuildings, fences and hay stackers are discussed and mapped for Western North America including Alaska and Canada. Major centers of innovation are identified in southwestern Montana, Mormon Utah, Hispanic New
Mexico and the eastern Sacramento Valley. The West is seen as a bewildering assemblage of unique places in which continuity, innovation and ethnicity have all shaped this diversity. The culture of the American West is not monolithic as has so often been

The reversed remanent magnetic polarity of glacial and glaciolacustrine sediments at Antes Fort allows for revision of the chronology of pre-Wisconsinan glaciation in central Pennsylvania.

Author discusses watershed conservation measures in West Virginia, which has 32 catchment areas. Each watershed is evaluated officially for a number of factors every five years. In addition, there are 90 grass-roots watershed associations that deal
with nonpoint polllution, sewage, water quantity, and land management and other issues. A case study of the watershed association in Knapps Creek, West Virginia is presented. - (SLD)

The age of the Rockland tephra, which includes an ash-flow tuff south and west of Lassen Peak in northern California and a widespread ash-fall deposit that produced a distinct stratigraphic marker in western North America, is constrained to 565,000
to 610,000 yr by direct dating using Ar 40/Ar 39 and U-Pb methods and by stratigraphy. Identification of Rockland tephra in ODP core 1018 offshore of central California is an important stratigraphic age that also constrains the eruption age to between 580,000
