Fine-interval (30-45 yr) sampling of a core from LakeVictoria's Damba Channel shows that numerous abrupt changes in the lake's diatom assemblages have occurred in response to climatic fluctuations over the past 11,400 C 14 yr. 4 distinct climatic
phases bounded by sudden transitions are inferred. The diatom-inferred paleoclimatic history for northern LakeVictoria closely resembles that inferred from a well-dated pollen record from Pilkington Bay.

Ice blisters develop annually on perennially frozen lakes in Northern Victoria Land. They are believed to be caused by hydrostatic pressures generated through progressive freezing of solute-rich water beneath the lake-ice cover during winter. Lake
-ice blisters in the study area differ from icing blisters described from the northern hemisphere. The latter are caused by hydraulic pessures and are found at locations such as river beds or spring sites on sloping terrain. The Antarctic lake-ice
blisters reflect the occurrence of dry-based perennially frozen lakes with high salt contents in an extremely cold and arid environment.

Lake Omeo is a relic of a more extensive lake formed when a basalt flow, dated as Upper Pliocene in age, dammed the flow of Morass Creek. This larger lake is referred to as Lake Morass. Downfaulting of part of the Lake Omeo basin and upthrow
of a narrow horst between the Morass Creek and Minute Creek catchments probably occurred at about the same time or later. Sedimentation of the natural overflow gap of the Lake Omeo basin during the existence of Lake Morass resulted in the basin becoming
isolated from Morass Creek as the basalt flow was incised. Clay sediments over 40 m thick were deposited in the downfaulted part of the basin. Two clay lunettes to the southeast of the present lake, and material of fluvial and lacustrine origin provide
evidence for alternation between wet periods when high water levels prevailed and dry periods with low water levels during which lunette building occurred. The evidence has been interpreted as indicating major changes in climate in the history of the lake
. At least three lunette building phases are proposed, separated by periods of high lake levels. A palaeosol buried beneath a layer of clay of lacustrine origin is ascribed an Upper Pliocene origin.

Several parameters representing aspects of vegetation, fire, erosion and lacustrine productivity are investigated to compare the environmental changes of the historic period against those of the last 2000 years at Lake Keilambete. The average

The AA. focus on a dry-based lake, i.e. frozen to the bottom, of the Dry Valleys of South Victoria Land to study how sediment becomes trapped in the lake ice. The study is based on data obtained not only from sedimentological investigations but also
A 210Pb chronology of sedimentation in a small floodplain lake in the Jamari river basin (Rondonia, Brazil) provided insight into the relationship between development and erosion in the Brazilian Amazon. Positive correlations between increased
sedimentation in the lake and levels of deforestation and mining in the Jamari basin suggested a major increase in erosion associated with these activities.

Frozen ground phenomena in the vicinity of Terra Nova Bay, Northern Victoria land, Antarctica : a preliminary report
Frozen ground phenomena in the Northern Foothills, Northern Victoria Land, include large-scale polygons, 15-20 m in diameter, and small frost mounds, 1-5 m high. The polygons are most widespread on terrain formed upon Younger Drift and are usually
lakes in the region. In most cases they appear related related to frost and icing blister activity caused by the episodic injection of free water from below.

abrupt warming. At about this time, a major change in the pattern of global rainfall occured. LakeVictoria was rejuvenated, the Red Sea freshened and Lake Lahontan dessicated. For the AA., the onset of the Bølling-Allerød warm interval appears to have
been marked by an abrupt reorganization of the Earth's climate system. Therefore the proposed linkage between the size of African closed basin lakes and insolation cycles must be reexamined.
