The A. deals with the vegetation of the Himalayas taking his 1957 map as basis of the presentation. This map reveals the phenomenon of the inner valleys and the climatically dry valleys. Progress in the knowledge of the vegetation since publication

A synthesis with an ecological characterization of the vegetation cover in Romania, related to the geographical conditions. The vegetation map of Romania (1:2 000 000) included in this book will be used for the vegetation map of Europe, in course
of elaboration. It contents both the natural vegetation, where it is preserved, and potential vegetation. The books contents also a series of fitocenological tables of the main associations. - (IS)

The paper attempts to establish the hillslope stability response to vegetation clearing in the Moresby Ranges. Stability calculations show that the « immediate » cause of failure are debris mantle saturation and the development of high positive pore
water pressures. But by considering the root strength that the native vegetation imparted to the debris mantle, it is clear that the « ultimate » cause of hillslope failure is the clearing of native vegetation.
This paper will describe the late glacial and Holocene pollen and vegetation record from Poets Hill Lake and compare the results with the other sites from varying altitudes in the same region. This comparison suggests that the development of pollen
/vegetation associations was time transgressive with altitude during the late glacial when climatic influences and migration rates were important, and that the mosaic of vegetation communities became more complex during the Holocene because of adjustment
Au cours de l'assèchement de marécages saumâtres d'arrière-mangrove, deux voies évolutives de la végétation semblent possibles, aboutissant chacune à un fourré de terre ferme : l'une liée à des apports sableux éoliens; l'autre sur sol frais à
Changes on vegetation caused by man can be found out by comparing plants reconstructed since 3 000 B.C. with present vegetation on the basis of development of human society. Today, industry in Slovakia is concentrated in 12 areas. There were
Five vegetation belts (lower montane, upper montane, dwarf pine, alpine and subnival) are described. Many endemics occur in the flora that has more than 1,000 vascular plant species. - (DWG)
SPOT satellite images from the dune fields reveal areas of poor vegetation and even areas without vegetation within a more or less non-influenced vegetation cover. Causes for the absence of vegetation are overgrazing and agriculture arranged

Between 1986 and 1992, surveillance of three selected paths revealed a pattern of increasing damage to vegetation and soil cover. An attempt was made to quantify the extent of trampling damage, and to examine possible causes of observed spatial

The major aims of this contribution are to describe the state of vegetation and flora in the period 1989 to 1991 and to re-assess the development of both over the last ten years in comparison with data from earlier surveys. In addition, the paper
Natural vegetation of coal waste areas is sparse and patchy with low plant cover. More than 50 native plants species frequently occur there; they are better suited to recolonizing such sites than are exotic plants. - (DWG)
