This article focuses on case study of one community in northwestern Ontario, and explored the role and social place of the hospital in a small rural northern town. The results show that this former is viewed not only as a community resource
and an institution that served the needs of the community, but participants describe the hospital in ways that reflected the place of the local hospital in the community. Three main themes are emerging from this work: the hospital as a source of community uniqueness
, the hospital as a source of security, and the hospital as a source of community development. The findings highlight the importance of a local community hospital, both in terms of added value and community identity.
The AA. establish whether spatial variation exists in acute hospital utilization in Ireland and, if it does, to identify the microlevel factors influencing this variation. Using the calibrated data from the aforementioned spatial microsimulation
model, the AA. examine whether the spatial patterns of the variables found to influence hospital utilization match the spatial pattern of actual hospital utilization rates at the small area, electoral division level.
This survey covers all patients treated and discharged from hospitals in the country during 1983 and these basic data were compared with the same data for 1969 (number of hospital beds, patients, patients by group of diseases).
