As de-industrialization continues to cause fundamental changes in the role of Britain's peripheral regions and urban areas, business services offer new and vital support for the task of helping to adjust to the new economic order. Empirical evidence
relating to establishments in eight urban areas is used to examine the way in which they assemble their inputs such as labour or specialist needs. The role of establishment status, function and location on the local impact of this demand is explored
