With urban development issues being central to political agendas in many Italian and European cities, this article will take a look at the European context of these development initiatives. It will give examples from three European cities which can
be seen as role models for the dynamic processes of urban change. Analysing projects in Glasgow, Barcelona and Vienna it is possible to find out what these strategies share as common features, where they differ and what difficulties might lay ahead

While urban growth is still persistent as the dominant paradigm in urban planning and development, the fact is that every fourth large city in the world was shrinking as early as in the 1990s. Furthermore, demographic forecasts are suggesting
that the number of cities losing population - and economic power - is set to increase rapidly. This article explains the mechanism underpinning the shrinking process in general, as well as describing the symptoms and reasons for urban decay in Detroit, one
of the world's best-known cases of a shrinking city. The work concludes with an examination of the impact of grassroots initiatives, such as community gardens, on urban renewal in abandoned areas. - (BJ)
