Commuting behaviour and urban form : a longitudinal study of a polycentric urban region in Denmark
Commuting ; Denmark ; Form of transport ; Journey to work ; Jylland ; Location ; Urban morphology ; Urban region ; Urban transport
It is an empirical investigation of the relation between urban form and commuting behaviour in a polycentric urban region. It explores to what extent urban form and location variables help to explain commuting time, distance and mode based
on an empirical case, East Jutland, which is a polycentric urban region. Empirical findings indicate that urban form and location variables help to explain the three selected aspects of commuting.
Characterising urban sprawl on a local scale with accessibility measures
Accessibility ; Indicator ; Land use ; Measurement ; South Korea ; Urban function ; Urban geography ; Urban morphology ; Urban sprawl
The study aims to develop and operationalise accessibility-based sprawl indicators. It employs two accessibility-based indicator categories and develops their measures : accessibilities to urban functions and open spaces. The index shaws a clear
Capturing images is entwined in a complex web of associations, linking the epistemology of research practice with the perceived nature of evolving spatial processes. One example of this is the way urban geographers use images to document
the transformation of urban landscape. The discourses of post-industrial entrepreneurial urbanism that stimulated the development of Irish cities during the Celtic Tiger offer a clear case in point. Taking the Celtic Tiger as a starting point, the article explores
one image taken during fieldwork researching urban change in Cork.
The paper offers an interpretation of Landscape Urbanism. It attempts to decode the prolix language in which L U is presented and to identify a number of ‘tenets’ which most of its adherents would hold. The second part of the paper questions some
of these tenets, asking whether L U’s attack on the urban–rural binary is well conceived and whether it is a helpful contribution to the problems raised by worldwide urbanisation. It concludes that there are a number of inconsistencies and lacunae which landscape
The effet of land-use controls on the spatial size of U.S. urbanized areas
Built up area ; Housing cost ; Land use ; Territorial control ; Town ; United States of America ; Urban area ; Urban growth ; Zoning
On a sample of US urbanized areas in 2000, the AA. test theoretical hypotheses of the effect of land-use controls on the spatial size of urban areas. Minimum lot-size zoning and maximum FAR restrictions expand the urban area, while maximum lot-size
zoning, urban growth boundaries, maximum square footage limits, maximum building permit restrictions, minimum person per room controls, and impact fees contract the urban area.
With the analysis of towns in Slovenia a classification, which elaborates the social and economic characteristics, was established. It was determined that it is possible to form eight socio-economic settlement types. Slovene urban system is dynamic
The geography of gentrification. Thinking through comparative urbanism
Gentrification ; Neo liberalism ; Post-colonialism ; Research ; Urban policy ; Urbanism ; World
The paper revisits the geography of gentrification thinking through the literature on comparative urbanism. Given the mega-gentrification affecting many cities in the Global South, gentrification researchers need to adopt a postcolonial approach
taking on board critiques around developmentalism, categorization and universalism. In addition they need to draw on recent work on the mobilities and assemblages of urban policies/policy-making in order to explore if, and how, gentrification has

Starting from the recognition of the fact that cities are no longer the ones to wich our institutional system refers, the essay offers an overview of the recent Italian urban history, investigating how cities changed over time and how geograhical
researches described and interpreted this phenomenon in different geographical contexts. Quoting from a recent report issued by the Italian council for social Sciences, the A. analyzes the current horizontal and vertical process of deconstruction of the urban
systems, emphasizing the need for a national urban policy. The “Urban Agenda” launched by the Italian Government should now answer to such a need. - (NF)
A historical review and assessment of urban heat island research in Singapore
Climatic change ; Heat island ; Research ; Seasonal variation ; Singapore ; Space time ; Urban area ; Urban climate ; Urbanization
This historical review of 20 studies since the 1960s examines the influence of urban development on the thermal environment in Singapore. Past observations are critically assessed with regard to experimental controls and station metadata. Changes
in urban heat island intensity and spatial coverage can be traced temporally. Rapid urban expansion is clearly reflected in spatially and temporally changing air and surface temperature patterns.

This interdisciplinary terrain is explored by using the example of an urban cemetery in North London as a starting point. Queer ecology may enrich our understanding of both urban materiality and the role of metaphors in urban theory. This idea
Contested Landscapes of Urban Sprawl: Landscape Protection and Regional Planning in Scania, Sweden, 1932–1947
Conflict ; Landscape ; Periurban development ; Regional planning authority ; Scania ; Sweden ; Twentieth Century ; Urban planning ; Urban sprawl ; Urbanization ; environmental planning ; peri-urban development ; planning history ; urban fringe
Studies in landscape and planning history are used here in order to critically examine the debate on urban sprawl and to reveal embedded conflicts within spatial planning aiming to curb sprawl. The paper aims to illustrate this with an examination
of one of the earliest attempts to control peri-urban development at a regional level in Sweden. The discourse on sprawl is first introduced and the fruitfulness of landscape studies in capturing inherent and conflicting aims within planning is examined
for the development of the plan, as well as the contradictory treatment of urban sprawl (on a local and regional level), is demonstrated. The final part discusses the importance of this historiography for the ability to deal with the current planning situation
. The conclusion is that urban sprawl is not necessarily the result of weak or absent planning, but rather of embedded contradictions within planning; therefore stronger planning will never be sufficient as long as the inherent conflicts within the plans

Transnational mobilities and urban spatialities. Notes from the Asia-Pacific
Eastern Asia ; International migration ; Pacific Region ; Temporary migration ; Territoriality ; Town ; Transnationalism ; Urban immigration
Recent debates in migration studies have emphasized the importance of attending to the urban as part of an effort to respatialize the study of mobility and transnationalism. The paper critically expands on these interventions through a more detailed
engagement with ideas of relationality and territoriality moving beyond permanent settlement to consider temporary migrants, and considering urban centres outside North America and Europe through discussion of cities in the Asia-Pacific. The paper discusses
two potential avenues towards a more sophisticated conceptualization of transnational mobilities and urban spatialities : moving beyond rupture in analysis of migrant settlement, and interrogating transnational and urban mobilities.

This paper provides an overview of the consequences of urbanisation on the hydrology of towns and cities, try to describe the urban hydrological cycle and the processes within the cycle that result in flooding. The AA. would like to introduce
the process of urban flood risk management. The central concept of this paper is to represent how it is possible to manage collectively the different aspects of the urban flood risk, and to demonstrate the successful management with them.

The paper investigates aspects of the urban hierarchy and concentration of patent sub-categories in US metropolitan areas by estimating Zipf, Gini and Moran's I coefficients. Results do not support a power law depiction of the location
of disaggregate patenting in the entire metropolitan system. Technologies are cross-classified, which reveals aspect of variety in locational patterns and offers clues into systems of knowledge exchange in urban-based technological advance.

The Urban West and the Rural Rest: Framing in Dutch Regional Planning in the 1950s
Agriculture ; Core-periphery ; Historical geography ; Industry ; Netherlands (The) ; Regional planning ; Regional planning authority ; Rural area ; Twentieth Century ; Urban area ; Urban-rural dichotomy ; northern Netherlands ; peri-urban landscape
This paper draws on the case of Dutch regional planning in the 1950s to investigate how ‘urban space’ and ‘rural space’ have traditionally been perceived as opposing concepts. During this decade, politicians, planners and policy-makers constructed
an image of an overdeveloped, urban, industrial centre on the one hand, and an underdeveloped, rural, agricultural periphery on the other. Rooted in a debate about the ‘harmonious’ development of the Netherlands, this image made a substantial contribution
to the schematic understanding of urban and rural space. Examining this frame as an historical construct helps to reveal the anachronistic character of many of the urban-rural differentiations that are made today.
