Calming down of traffic is a town- and traffic- planning concept which shall serve and conserve the qualities of towns. It must also be an integral component of the concepts to reform the town-traffic as well as to improve the town-space in function

On the basis of a Swiss research paper, this contribution demonstrates how and to what extent traffic areas can be minimised and the intensity of utilisation reduced. It is above all in urban areas where there is potential for savings and reductions
in favour of pedestrian, recreational and green areas, and thus for the benefit of the quality of urban development. - (L'A.).

A set of double-log multiple regression models is developed to examine the monthly tunnel traffic of six major toll tunnels in Hong Kong for a 22-year period, from 1979 to 2000. The findings suggest that toll increases are likely to be effective
in raising revenue for tunnel management authorities but ineffective in reducing automobile traffic for transport planning purposes.

Air pollution is due to road traffic an inevitable outcome of internal combustion in engines of vehicles and some other processes. Air near the roads is more polluted with some pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone, particulate
matter and some others. Monitoring the air quality is a key issue, when one wants to estimate environmental impacts of the road traffic. The article shows a method of passive samplers for air quality monitoring along different roads in the area

Traffic problems are causing a considerable reduction in the well-beeing of people living or staying in cities. All in all it can be expected that the pressure caused by problems of urban development will grow as soon as sector specific and demand
-orientated measures will be taken against the pressure of traffic. This is the starting point of the field of research called « Urban Development and Traffic » whose model projects try to put concepts of an integrated urban development and traffic planning
