The purpose of this planned special issue is to bring recent research to the attention of those who could not be expected to follow the numerous journals and monographic studies of urban historians.
The paper outlines the history of geographical expeditions, pointing to the existence of two traditions. The later twentieth century notion of the urban geographical expedition is discussed and applied to Johannesburg. (AJC).
