The goal of this paper is to explore the structure of racially driven politics in the city of St Louis as a setting for the extending the Boudon contextual model to voting in urban contexts and to assess the significance of spatial adjacency when
applied to urban voting. The results of analysis support the idea that race, and perhaps class as well, are fundamental to the structure of voting in city elections and also highlight some methodological problems.

The larger, ethnically diverse waves of immigration to the US during the 1980s and 1990s affect redistribution dynamics within the country. There are important consequences for broad regions, states and metropolitan areas: the new immigration
and internal migration patterns appear to exacerbe the differences by contributing to a demographic balkanisation. A migration classification of states and metropolitan areas is made (period 1985-90).
