Turkey’s possible membership of the European Union from a cultural perspective
Cultural identity ; Cultural landscape ; Cultural studies ; Europe ; European Union ; Islam ; Turkey
This paper examines the cultural aspects of the Turkey–EU relations by employing the World Values Survey for Turkey, the EU, and the Muslim world. The results indicate that Turkey’s shared values are between those in the EU countries
and in the Muslim world, reflecting the country’s dualistic cultural landscape. Religiosity has been increasing in Turkey, accompanied by an increasing tendency toward traditionalism and a decline of confidence in the EU. They also confirm that higher religiosity
increases the chance of higher justifiability of traditional values, stronger criticism of democracy, and lower confidence in the EU. From the critical and liberal constructivist approach, Turkey’s cultural dissimilarity matters for possible EU membership.

Die Türkei. Geopolitische Kontroversen um die Mitgliedschaft in der EU
Europe ; European Union ; Geopolitics ; Policy ; Turkey
The formal process of Turkey´s accession to the EU has started. The result is open, but both sides have to take all measures to make membership possible. At the same time in public the question is discussed whether Turkey is really part of Europe
. The genesis of the geopolitical image of Turkey and that of Europe is determined by ideological strategies, which can not be verified by an academic analysis in most cases. Many one-sided, distorted representations are detected (history, religion, Cyprus
). The construction of “Europe”- propagated by politics and media- as a natural continent and/or as a continent of European civilization is untenable: neither geological, nor socio-cultural limits can be used for a sufficient exclusion of Turkey. (IfL)
