The tuna nets of the Gulf of Cadiz were the support for one of the most important fisheries in pre-industrial Europe. The literature describes the fishing methods and the localization of the tuna nets, but does not provide quantitative evidence
of their output. On the basis of a historical record of the bluefin tuna catches, collected in the XVIIIth Century by the house of Medina Sidonia, the AA. have estimated a series of fishing production for the period 1525-1763. Such series shows the secular trend
and the cyclical fluctuations of the bluefin tuna fishery. - (AAG)
