Daily observations of maximum and minimum temperatures from NWSCOOP (National Weather Service Cooperative Observer Program) stations are used to examine trends in the magnitude and frequency of extreme daily maximum (TMAX) and minimum (TMIN) surface
temperatures in California for the period 1950-2005. Significant trends are found in both TMAX and TMIN but are more prevalent in minimum temperature. Significant trends in temperature extremes are well distributed across the state, with little clustering
. Urban sites have larger numbers of significant trends, but trend magnitudes are generally similar at urban and rural sites.

The AA. summarize the theory of residual maximum likelihood (REML) as it applies to kriging in the presence of trend. They present the equations to show how estimates of the trend are combined with kriging of residuals to give empirical best linear
unbiased predictions (E-BLUPs). They then apply the method to estimate the height of the sub-Upper-Chalk surface beneath the Chiltern Hills of southeast England from 238 borehole data. The variogram of the REML residuals is substantially different from
that computed bu ordinary least sqares (OSL) analysis. The map of the predicted surface is similar to that made from kriging with the OLS variogram.

In stratigraphical analysis polynomial trendsurfaces may be used to approximate structural surfaces or intervals betwween these surfaces or other variables of interest. Using the derived algorithm it is possible to compute rapidly the exact volume
under the trendsurface, within any arbitrary closed polygonal boundary. This volume is of use in itself, or as a measure of goodness-of-fit of the trendsurface.

The use of laboratory spectroscopy to establish Pteronia incana spectral trends and separation from bare surfaces and green vegetation
The spectral trends of Pteronia incana, an unpalatable invader shrub, and its separation from bare surface and green vegetation are examined using a high resolution spectrometer. A consistent spectral trend showing a clear distinction between
the surfaces was achieved using the first order derivative. - (AJC)

Trends in year-to-year fluctuations in surface air temperature, Canadian Arctic
Long term trends in the year-to-year fluctuations in the mean annual temperature anomalies from 1948 to 1983 were obtained for eight regions in the Arctic. The results indicate that the temperatures in the Canadian Arctic as a whole, have become
