There is an imagined dichotomy between American big cities and small towns. The former are supposedly unfriendly, impersonal, and prone to social deviance. The latter are warm and friendly, like a nurturing extended family. A. argues
that these sterotypes have blinded us to locality-based communities within the big cities. He calls for a fuller understanding of how small town idealizations have influenced metropolitan America. - (SLD)
