Reasons for non-adoption of soil conservation technologies and how to overcome them
Paper focuses on reasons for the non-adoption, at least over the long run, of soil conservation technologies by local farmers. Governments are criticized for promoting expensive structures aimed at soil retention rather than at vegetative cover
. Long-term adoption depends on building community capabilities that permit farmers to experiment and innovate. The results of COSECHA's field studies on farmer productivity and technological adoption are discussed. - (SLD)

Using a case study from the mid-Andean valleys of the Cochabamba Department of Bolivia, the A. examine the social and economic factors that influence household response to soil and water conservation technologies (SWC). They found that in less
intensive systems with no irrigation the adoption of such technologies is low. Also, the establishment and maintanance costs of SWC had to be low for unsubsidized adoption to be visible. - (SLD)
